Why Auto Repair Shops Charge For Diagnostic Time.

Why Auto Repair Shops Charge Diagnostic Fees Diagnostic time expenses are an equally unwanted expense for both the consumer and the repair shop. For the consumer, they are often buying the unseen and untouchable.  They spend a few hundred dollars to find out exactly what is wrong with their car but don’t get to see it, touch it, hear it or anything.  Then they still have to pay for whatever repair is recommended once diagnosed properly. On the flip side, if the proper diagnostic time is not spent and you just take an educated guess of what is wrong based off the most common things found on Google, YouTube, parts store and such sources, you run the likely chance of replacing an expensive part that does not fix the problem.  With the rising parts costs, it is no longer a good financial decision to skip the proper diagnostic testing and replace the most common part.  Back when you could get the most common parts for less than $100.00, it made se ... read more

Are Transmission Services Still Recommended?

Are Transmission Services Still Recommended For My Vehicle? What Makes a Great Car Mechainc

What Makes a Great Car Mechainc

Why We Feel Strongly We Have Assembled The Best Team Of Mechanics in Utah! Our family-owned auto repair shop right here in Layton, Utah has a slightly different approach when looking to add a new mechanic to our team.  Yes, it is important to have a lot of experience and knowledge to be a good mechanic but to be a good mechanic here at Shadetree Automotive, you must be an amazing person to be around as well.  Step one when interviewing a potential new mechanic is to determine if they are genuinely a good person. “I have the tools and skills to teach someone to be a better mechanic, but I do not have the skills to teach someone how to be a good person. Their parents needed to do that years ago”  is a common quote from our owner Tom Lambert. So when we start the hunt for our next mechanic, we are asking very specific questions to ensure we find a good fit for our very specific culture. Once we have found a potential mechanic candidate that fit ... read more

Why the parts store is less money

Why the parts store is less money

As an auto repair shop owner, one of the questions I get asked regularly is:  “I jumped online and found the part for my vehicle for $120.00, why are you charging me $260.00 for the same thing? ”.  Often times followed up with “Can I just go get the part and bring it to you?”  There are several different answers for this very question.  Here are two of the most common:  The biggest reason is warranty.  I give you a 3 year 100k mile warranty on any job I do for you.  In order to do that, I am very selective on the technician that performs the work and the quality of part that is supplied.  Sometimes I am using the same or very similar part you can find at the local parts store.  Other times I am using a very specific brand or supplier based on the years of knowledge and product testing we have accumulated.  Does that make sense? To be completely honest, the other reason is that I make almost half of my living o ... read more

Our car services range from the simplest maintenance items to large-scale undertakings that will help keep your vehicle on the road. One such simple maintenance item is a basic oil change, and this is an area where you can be a big help to us as well. Here are a few common signs that your vehicle is in need of an oil change in the near future. Idling Issues As you’re idling at a traffic light or elsewhere, have you started to notice the vehicle is frequently shaking? This could be a sign that dirty or contaminated oil is in the engine, and is causing friction between pistons, rings and bearings within the engine. These areas have less lubricating oil to facilitate these movements, hence the rougher operation that can lead to shaking. Power Loss During Acceleration That lack of lubrication in the engine can also lea ... read more
