Can we fix your Bmw transmission jerking or slipping? Yes we can! Not only can we fix it, but it is commonly something more cost effective than you would think.
Any time we have a transmission acting abnormally as bmw owners, we start to think the worst and start to see $$$ leaving our budget. Our shop has been specializing in Bmw repairs for years and I can tell you that it is typically not near as bad as you would think. Yes it is fairly expensive if you have a transmission failure but there are far more common repairs that can be done.
Here are the most common things our Bmw specialists find when a transmission is slipping or jerking:
Improper fluid level due to a leak – Our Bmw’s have so many shields underneath that it is possible to have a fluid leak for a while without even seeing a drip on our garage floor. Bmw transmissions are very sensitive on fluid level. If your vehicle develops a leak that lowers the fluid level, it will cause the transmission to slip or jerk.
Poor fluid quality – The Bmw manufacturer does not give proper guidance of when to service the fluid in your transmission. Most bmw guides show “lifetime fill”. Due to our decades of experience specializing in Bmw maintenance, we have proven that Bmw transmission fluid is great, but does not last a lifetime. We have found that the fluid typically breaks down to the point of needing replacement every 50k miles. We have also found that the internal filter usually becomes full and due for replacement every 100k miles.
Software issues – Your Bmw transmission has a lot of electrical components commanded by a computer module. It is common for our Bmw specialists to find a software update related to fixing a transmission jerking or slipping concern.
Engine or Transmission Mounts – Your engine and transmission utilize mounts that are a combination of metal, urethane/rubber and sometimes hydraulic fluid. As these mounts wear or fail, they allow excessive engine and transmission movements that will feel like a jerk or transmission slip.
Engine Issues – It is common that one of our clients brings their Bmw to us to diagnose a transmission jerk or slip, and for our mechanics to find an issue causing the engine to not run properly. This can either cause a similar feeling to a transmission slip or it might actually cause the vehicles modules to send improper signals causing an abnormal feeling.
Failed shift solenoids – Your Bmw transmission utilizes electrical solenoids inside the transmission for all types of operations. They are common to fail and cause a jerk or slip. We replace transmission solenoids quite commonly in our shop.
Internal transmission wear or failure – Although it is rare, sometimes a Bmw transmission has an internal failure of the torque converter or the transmission itself and requires replacement. This is not very common and typically happens if one of the above items goes un-resolved for too long.
The best advice I can give you if your Bmw transmission is jerking or slipping is to get it into us sooner rather than later. More often than not, there is a repair that can be done. Repairing your transmission is far more cost effective and convenient than waiting until the vehicle needs a transmission replacement. Yes we replace Bmw transmissions, but we would much rather give you better news that we can repair whenever possible.
